How to calculate customer acquisition cost

CAC = what you spent ÷ new paying customers. Three steps get you a number you can defend.

1

Pick the event that pays you

A first deposit, a funded account or a first trade. Each customer is counted once, at that event.

2

Add up what it cost

Ad spend gives media-only CAC, the figure ad platforms report. Add creative, tools and team for the fully loaded CAC finance asks for.

3

Divide, then compare

Divide cost by customers over the same period. Compare the result with what a customer is worth to you.

Count the customer at the event that pays you

In crypto, iGaming and finance, a sign-up costs the user nothing. Revenue starts at the first deposit, the funded account or the first trade. CAC counted at that event reflects what a paying customer costs.

Counting it there needs tracking on that event from day one.

From Blockchain-Ads campaign data
Advertisers who set up deposit tracking before their first ad set were almost twice as likely to ever measure CAC on a deposit.

Customer acquisition cost FAQ

What is a good customer acquisition cost?

A good CAC is one your customers pay back. A common rule of thumb is a lifetime value at least three times CAC. The benchmarks above show where your number sits among campaigns in your vertical; your own margins decide whether it works.

What is the difference between CAC and CPA?

CPA is the cost of whichever action you count, such as a registration or an install. CAC is the cost of a paying customer. When the action you count is the paying event, the two are the same number.

Should CAC include salaries and agency fees?

Include them for fully loaded CAC, the figure finance uses. Ad spend alone gives media-only CAC, the figure ad platforms report as cost per conversion. Tracking both shows how much of your cost sits outside the media.

What period should I calculate CAC over?

Use the same period for costs and customers. When deposits arrive days after the click, pick a period long enough for them to land.
